Chinese New Year Day - The Appearance of Life Style at Beijing in 1761
This Chinese hand-scroll painting depicts the Chinese New Year Day at the Ching Dynasty's Forbidden City, Beijing, in 1761. Chinese New Year Day is the the first day of the first lunar month. The Imperial Observatory observed the unusual astronomical phenomenon of the Sun and Moon both rising together and the Five Planets (Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn) lined up together on the Chinese New Year Day. It was predicted it would be a year of peace throughout the land and of a bountiful harvest. On the Chinese New Year Day, government officers, military soldier and various residences dressed up and greeted the New Year.
